Breizh - History: A Legacy of Autonomy and Resistance

Brittany’s history is as bold and independent as its people. Long before it became part of France, Brittany was an independent duchy with its own rulers, language, and customs. Even today, the Breton flag—Gwenn-ha-du, with its striking black and white stripes—flies proudly as a symbol of cultural sovereignty.

  • In the 18th century, the region was a stronghold for the Chouans, royalist rebels who fought against the French Revolution’s anti-religious and anti-monarchist reforms. The Chouan Museum in Plouharnel keeps this story alive, showcasing artifacts and personal stories from the resistance.

  • During World War II, Brittany again became a center of resistance. Brave local networks helped Allied forces, sheltered refugees, and fought for freedom in the face of occupation.

Brittany's medieval and early modern history can still be felt in its walled cities, majestic cathedrals, and persistent sense of regional pride.
