Breizh - Music: The Heartbeat of Brittany

Music flows through Brittany like a lifeblood - whether in bustling cities or quiet countryside villages, the sound of pipes, drums, and song is never far away.

  • Bagad de Lann Bihoué: Founded in 1952, this esteemed Breton pipe band serves as a musical unit of the French Navy. Beyond their regular performances at international festivals, they have the honor of representing France at significant national events. Notably, in 2022, they opened the Bastille Day military parade on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, performing before President Emmanuel Macron and other dignitaries—a testament to their prestige and the cultural significance of Breton music.
  • Bagad de Vannes: This innovative ensemble from Vannes has been instrumental in bringing Breton music to a broader audience. In 2014, they captivated viewers across France by winning Season 9 of “La France A Un Incroyable Talent” (“France's Got Talent"), securing over 90% of the public vote in the finale. Their performances showcased a dynamic blend of traditional Breton instruments like bagpipes and bombardes with modern musical arrangements, highlighting the adaptability and vibrancy of Breton musical heritage.

Festival Interceltique de Lorient: Held every August, this 10-day international festival celebrates the shared heritage of the Celtic nations. It features performances from across Brittany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Galicia, Asturias, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man, attracting over 800,000 visitors annually.

Kan ha Diskan: A traditional form of call-and-response singing, often performed at fest-noz—lively night festivals where people of all ages come together to dance in circles, linked by rhythm and joy.
